Four days, four races. The marathon season finale of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo brought Mičánek Motorsport a trophy for third place in the final round of the European series. During the weekend’s World Final, Bronislav Formánek and Štefan Rosina mounted a strong charge for the podium, but it narrowly slipped from their grasp.
“It was the toughest race weekend of the season for us — both in terms of the number of races and the level of competition. Misano is the home circuit for a large part of the grid, and we spent five days trying to close the gap that our rivals naturally have here,” reflects team manager Jiří Mičánek Jr. on the final event of the season.
Bronislav Formánek and Štefan Rosina first took to the track on Thursday and Friday for the sixth round of the European branch of the championship. From the opening practice sessions, they had to claw back the advantage held by the Italian teams on their home circuit. They finished fifth in the first race and improved by one position in the second — a result that ultimately earned them a podium. “After a rival team lodged a protest, the technical stewards discovered that our competitors from Boutsen VDS had made an illegal modification to their differential. Following their disqualification, we were promoted to third place,” explains Jiří Mičánek.
“We were battling with them in the race and kept thinking there was no way their car could be that quick. I’m glad the truth came out in the end and that, after the results were adjusted, we were placed where we deserved to be,” says Bronislav Formánek. “Of course, it would’ve been nicer to collect the trophy on the podium, but I’m happy that we earned the result fairly, with a car that always passed technical inspection,” adds Štefan Rosina.
Rosina and Formánek also had to make up a performance gap in the World Final, held on Saturday and Sunday. In this unique format, the very best drivers from all three continental Lamborghini Super Trofeo series line up together on one grid. “It’s a special kind of event — no one’s racing for championship points here, it’s simply all or nothing. That was especially evident in the first race, which was extremely tense and full of penalties,” explains Jiří Mičánek. Those very penalties ultimately cost Mičánek Motorsport powered by Buggyra a place on the podium.
In the twilight race, Štefan Rosina brought the Huracán home in third place, but after two penalties for contact with rivals were applied, he and Formánek were classified seventh. “I gave it everything I had. I haven’t seen this level of pace and competition all season and with darkness falling, visibility was poor as the cars don’t have much lighting,” recalls Štefan Rosina of the race’s key moments. “Without those contacts, I wouldn’t have been able to overtake, and the end result would probably have been the same as after the penalties anyway.”
While Saturday’s opening race saw an extreme number of penalties and on-track clashes, Sunday’s contest was noticeably calmer. Both Formánek and Rosina showed that their pace improved with every kilometre, ironically setting their fastest laps of the entire week in the very last race. “We kept getting quicker, but in the end we were just short on time or maybe a bit of luck to reach that third place. This time it didn’t go our way, but earlier in the season luck was on our side. Finishing the season with a world final podium would have been fantastic, but even so, there’s absolutely nothing to be ashamed of,” commented Formánek on the second race result.
The Lamborghini Super Trofeo World Final marked the conclusion of this year’s season. In the European series, Formánek and Rosina competed in eight rounds, claiming seven victories and standing on the podium thirteen times. The team secured the GT2 European Series title with authority and, contrary to their original plans, made a significant impact on the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Europe season as well.
“In Super Trofeo, we ended up competing in more than half the season, even though that wasn’t our original plan. Across the four rounds we entered, including the World Final, we secured four podium finishes, two of them victories. Considering that this was our team’s third-priority racing programme this season, I think it’s a remarkable achievement,” concludes Jiří Mičánek.
“With the number of European races we contested, this was our most demanding season in the entire fifty-year history of the team. I have to thank Broňek and Štefan, and through them the whole team. We managed to finish every race without any serious technical issues or accidents. With a bit of the luck we enjoyed this year, it has turned out to be our most successful season ever,” concludes Jiří Mičánek.
