Mičánek Motorsport powered by Buggyra begins the second half of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo season this weekend. Bronislav Formánek and Anthony Pretorius, as well as Jakub Knoll and Renaud Kuppens, spent the summer break at the top of the Pro-Am and AM standings respectively. The aim at the Nürburgring is to add more valuable points to their title campaigns.
“The second half of the season takes us to circuits that suit us and where we regularly achieve very good results. But the first half showed just how important it is to be consistent and avoid mistakes. That’s what we want to focus on now. Just as in the previous two years, when we won titles in Lamborghini Super Trofeo and the GT2 European Series, the key is to finish races and keep scoring points,” explains team manager Jiří Mičánek Jr.
The Nürburgring is where the team made a one-off appearance away from its GT2 European Series campaign last year, entering Super Trofeo as a wildcard and winning the opening race of the weekend. Bronislav Formánek was one half of that pairing, just as he had been in 2024. This year, however, the experienced Štefan Rosina has been replaced by the exceptionally quick Anthony Pretorius. “We traditionally go well here and I like the circuit. On the other hand, we don’t know whether rain might complicate the weekend. Anthony was extremely quick here last year as well,” says the two-time European champion.
Pretorius claimed pole position in the Pro category here last year. He will be targeting the fastest qualifying time again this season, not least because starting at the front reduces the risk of getting caught up in an incident. “It will be very important for us to put ourselves in the best possible position for the start of the race and, above all, not to make a mistake,” says the nineteen-year-old member of the Lamborghini Young Drivers programme for the most talented young drivers on the grid.
Formánek and Pretorius currently hold an eleven-point championship lead, built before the summer break at Spa-Francorchamps, where they managed to pull clear of the rival Biglieri–Moretti pairing in the standings.
“With Broněk and Anthony as strong as they are, we can’t aim for anything other than victory. On the other hand, we’ve already experienced at Imola this year how two small mistakes can cost us a lot of points. We don’t want to repeat that,” explains Jiří Mičánek.
The second pairing of Jakub Knoll and Renaud Kuppens will take the same approach. They share the lead in the AM standings, level on points with title rival Grzegorz Moczulski. For them too, the priority will be to finish without incidents. At Spa, Kuppens and Knoll finally broke a run of bad luck in races affected by incidents and collisions that were not of their making. Belgian driver Kuppens finished the second race at his favourite circuit in second place. “The Nürburgring is similar to Spa. There are long corners and, for me, it’s also something of a home race because it isn’t far from Belgium or Spa,” laughs the forty-eight-year-old veteran and winner of the 2024 Lamborghini Super Trofeo World Final. “It’s going to be a difficult return after such a long summer break, so I’ll want to get back into the racing rhythm as quickly as possible.”
His team-mate Jakub Knoll is also looking forward to the Nürburgring. Spa marked the end of a run of circuits he enjoys less, while the second half of the season takes him to some of his favourites.
“We had a long break, but we interrupted it with a Central European championship race at Most, so we’re already back up to speed. Now we need to continue as strongly as we did in the first half of the season. That applies to Renaud. I need to drive better,” jokes Knoll. Together with Kuppens, he will be looking to take sole possession of the AM championship lead and end their wait for a first class victory of the season.
